Jean (Huth) Hammer, 99, died March 4, 2024 at her residence. Jean was born July 23, 1924 in Vintondale, PA, the sixth of seven daughters born to John and Mable (Hampson) Huth. Preceded in death by her parents; husband Ralph (1987); son David (2006); and five sisters, three of whom were in the military service during World War II. She is survived by daughters Linda Kurowski, Johnstown; Brenda Hammer, Omaha, NE; sister Carol Brest, California; granddaughter Laura Nadel (Joey); great-granddaughters Alexia and Lyla, Delaware. She had many nieces and nephews and also several great nieces and nephews. She was a Benedictine Oblate with affiliation to the St. Vincent Seminary, and a member of the Serra Club, Caring Friends, Hilltop Area Senior Citizens, a life member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Johnstown Elks, Secretary of the Life Underwriters Assn. for many years, working for Baltimore Life Insurance, and then Metropolitan Life, from where she retired. After retirement, she participated in golf and bowling into her early nineties and also belonged to several card playing groups. She enjoyed extensive traveling in many states and countries. Daily, she fed the birds—and (chippies, squirrels and deer)! She was an avid sports fan for St. Joseph’s grade school and Bishop McCort HS (where her children attended), and also Notre Dame and the Pittsburgh teams. Jean got great enjoyment taking care of the flowers in her yard. Her favorite Christmas cookie was the sand tart. She was very thankful to many – family, friends, neighbors and OMOS members for unlimited help, caring and friendship, and to the Lord for her good life. She was a former member of the closed St. Joseph Church and a member of Our Mother of Sorrows, where funeral service will be held with Fr. Mark Begly, celebrant. In her years of attending St. Joseph’s and OMOS, she was a lector and a member of the collection counting team for over 30 years. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Bishop McCort High School or Interim Choice Hospice. Her daughters will receive friends at Our Mother of Sorrows, 415 Tioga St. Friday from 10 AM until time of mass at 11. Family is being served by Picking-Treece-Bennett Mortuary
